Below our just some important dates in time for the Hernando County founders!
The Great Depression caused the Brooksville Chamber of Commerce to retreat from public view for several years, but a revival occurred in 1938 when banker Alfred McKethan was elected president.
In 1925, visionary leaders in Hernando County came together to establish the first Chamber of Commerce, electing Frederick Williamson as its inaugural president. Their goal was clear: to provide a unified voice for local businesses and promote the area’s potential. However, like much of the nation, the Chamber faced challenges during the Great Depression and retreated from public activity for several years.
The growth of Hernando County elevated it to a new level, but the growth also led to divisions within the county and, by 1980, Hernando County had three separate chambers: Brooksville, Ridge Manor, and Spring Hill. While each chamber contributed uniquely to its area, they struggled to grow cohesively.
In 1967, the Mackle brothers approached the Brooksville Chamber of Commerce with plans to develop a new community called Spring Hill.
In 1991, Brooksville and Ridge Manor merged to form the Eastside Chamber of Commerce, while Spring Hill became known as the Westside Chamber of Commerce.
In 1990, Morris Porton advocated for the merger of all three chambers, since being fragmented makes it harder to unite on issues affecting the entire county.
On December 22, 1992, after former Eastside Chamber President Steve Emerson and Westside Chamber President Vince Vanni signed an agreement to unite, the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce was officially established, marking a significant milestone in the region's history.
